Mental or emotional implications of back pain

If you're experiencing back pain, see if these mental causes could be true for you. These affirmations are from my book, Heal Your Body. Hay House has a special offer on this title, along with a few other goodies. http://www.hayhouse.com/shop-catalog/2012/fall-clearance/under-5&utm_id=HAYFB

I think it's helpful to see possible connections between back pain and the emotional pain/fear/guilt/anxiety a person goes through. I agree that affirmations such as loving and approving ourselves, and trusting our needs are always taken care of can help relieve the physical conditions in our body. I found it to be true in my own case regarding heart palpitations - I think this was partly due to self-condemnation in the past. I am glad to have been learning to let go of condemnation and to love and accept myself unconditionally since.

Treating Hiatal Hernia Naturally

WHAT IS HIATAL HERNIA?

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiatus_hernia

A hiatus hernia or hiatal hernia is the protrusion (or herniation) of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OR POSSIBLE CAUSES/CONTRIBUTORS OF HIATAL HERNIA?

I have done a quick internet search about haital hernia and the possible causes and risk factors, and it appears that the risk factors include being overweight, smoking, above age 50, and stress.

HOW IS HIATAL HERNIA DIAGNOSED?

It can be diagnosed through a gastroscopy test, and when the result of the test is out, the doctor will discuss the result with the person.

TREATING/PREVENTING HIATAL HERNIA THROUGH MAKING CHANGES IN DIET

We can avoid foods that cause heartburn,  such as certain acidic food, spicy food, milk, etc, wherever possible. More information is found in this website "Treating heartburn naturally" under the last section on "Practise Good Eating Habits Regularly".

This website recommends drinking aloe vera juice twice a day, among other suggestions.  http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/askquestion/12951/health-advice-on-hiatus-hernia-treatment-for-hiatu.html

TREATING/PREVENTING HIATAL HERNIA THROUGH EXERCISES

This website suggests relaxation exercises http://drbenkim.com/articles/hiatal-hernia-treatment.htm

In the following website, someone made an interesting suggestion for a simple fix through a series of exercises that involve drinking warm water first thing in the morning and doing squating exercises regularly as often as necessary.

  http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/hiatal-hernia.html
06/19/2010: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "This ongoing fix for a hiatus hernia comes from the 'Alternatives' health tips of Dr. David Williams.

First, a Simple Test:

It's not foolproof, but some doctors have their patients take a deep breath and hold it for 40 seconds. If you can't hold your breath for that long, and there are no other problems, then a hiatus hernia is a possibility.

A Simple Fix

If the top portion of the stomach is stuck up above the diaphragm, then the obvious answer is to get it out. This can be done in two steps:

Drink about a glass of either room temperature or slightly warm water when you get out of bed first thing in the morning. (No coffee, no tea, no juice, no cold water, just warm water.)

Then, while standing, bring your arms straight out from your sides and bend your elbows so that your hands are touching your chest. Then stand up on your toes as high as possible and DROP down onto your heels, rather like a weightlifter's squat! You should force a pretty good jolt. Drop down like this 10 times in a row. Then, while standing with your arms up, pant short quick breaths for about 15 seconds. That's it.

The warm water acts like a weight in the stomach. Warm water doesn't cause the stomach to cramp, but instead it relaxes it. Spreading your arms stretches the diaphragm and opens up that hole in the back. Dropping down on your heels jerks the stomach out of the hole, and the panting tightens up the diaphragm muscle to close the hole.

You need to do this exercise every day - not just until everything feels normal. This will also strengthen the area, and make the hiatal hernia less likely to come back.

Try it! It costs nothing."
Doing abdominal exercises, such as sit-ups at moderate levels, can help treat and/or prevent hiatal hernia, as they help strengthen abdominal muscles.

"Certain exercises will provide relief from your symptoms, possibly forever. One activity is simply walking. Walking at a brisk pace, using good posture and holding in your abdominal muscles, can really help relieve the pressure you feel in your chest. Because you are holding yourself upright and bouncing slightly, your stomach can slide down back into place. Walking also provides stress relief, which will lower your stomach acid production and keep your stomach from clenching. Stress is a contributor to hiatal hernia. Any abdominal exercise, like sit-ups, will help strengthen the muscles in the area if done in moderation. Don't do the extreme-type crunches because too much force can actually worsen your condition. Take it slow and easy, looking for gradual results. Yoga and Pilates may be beneficial because they aim to strengthen the entire organism, especially the core muscles."
TREATING/PREVENTING HIATAL HERNIA THROUGH LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Avoiding people and/or situations where there are low vibrations can help relieve and/or prevent stress.

Here's sharing another relevant information that I thought is useful for treating and preventing hiatal hernia naturally. I learnt that poor sitting positions/postures may also cause or contribute to the condition.

This website says changing to a squatting position when using the toilet for defecation can even help to remedy the hiatus hernia problem, as it would decrease straining and ease pressure on the stomach.

"According to Dr. Denis Burkitt, "Hiatus hernia has its maximum prevalence in economically developed communities in North America and Western Europe ... In contrast the disease is rare in situations typified by rural African communities."[3] Burkitt attributes the disease to insufficient dietary fiber and the use of the unnatural sitting position for defecation. Both factors create the need for straining at stool, increasing intraabdominal pressure and pushing the stomach through the esophageal hiatus in the diaphragm."

This website supports the findings, and suggests how people can adopt a safe squatting position in toilet which is more natural and comfortable position to empty the bowels.

TREATING/PREVENTING HIATAL HERNIA THROUGH CHIROPRACTIC THERAPY

Besides diet, exercise and lifestyle changes, chiropractors can help in healing hiatal hernia.

There are some testimonies in this website on how chiropractors have helped to heal hiatal hernia.

This video demonstrates how a chiropractor helps someone to find relief from heartburn.

In the same website http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/hiatal-hernia.html someone shared a testimony on how hiatal hernia can be healed by a chiropractor.

12/20/2010: Kauai_syren from Mendocino, Ca replies: "To the person who is suffering Hiatel Hernia with no luck:
Have you thought about the possibly that you could be gluten intolerant? I am gluten intolerant and suffer hiatel hernias when I am exposed to gluten... Also, both my left and right ileocecal valves open up. This causes a lot of pain and I suffer....! However, I am very lucky and blessed as I have a wonderful doctor that always seems to fix me. She is a doctor of chiropractic and an applied kinesiologist specializing in nutrition and food allergy testing. She is also celiac (allergic to gluten). If you are intrigued and want to know more, please take your chance! Being gluten free changed my life. I don't know what I would have done if I had not made this change. It is hard, but is there really any price to pay for feeling healthy?"
I think based on these testimonies, it is worth considering seeing a chiropractor. Otherwise, one can still apply the above-mentioned natural remedies, in the areas of diet, exercise and lifestyle changes, that are customised to one's specific needs.

Treating heartburn naturally

WHAT IS HEARTBURN?

According to this website http://www.naturalnews.com/019756_heartburn_antacids.html#ixzz25ygGrYJi
"Heartburn occurs when foods mix with acid to form a liquid that rises into the esophagus, causing chest pain or a burning sensation in the stomach."
Heartburn is also known as acid reflux, or GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease).

HOW TO TREAT HEARTBURN NATURALLY

The following websites recommended some foods that help treat and/or prevent heartburn and aid digestion, including apple cider vinegar, ginger, probiotics and aloe vera juice.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a great natural remedy not only because it is cheap and easily available in supermarkets, but it is also effective in treating heartburn without any side effect.
http://www.naturalnews.com/037114_foods_happy_belly.html

"Apple cider vinegar is regarded as an excellent digestive aid by many alternative practitioners and nutritionists, but not so much by MDs and mainstream dieticians.

Use an apple cider vinegar that has not been pasteurized or filtered for best results. Before each meal, one or two tablespoons downed in a half glass of water can be beneficial. Water with meals should be room temperature for optimum digestion."
http://www.naturalnews.com/035720_acid_reflux_natural_remedies_heartburn.html

"Dr. Group recommends organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon in a little bit of water, to eliminate heartburn. This seems counterintuitive in that apple cider vinegar increases stomach acid to aid digestion before meals. But there are many testimonials claiming it works."
http://www.naturalnews.com/031428_heartburn_ginger.html

"One of the most highly recommended acid reflux remedies is apple cider vinegar. Sip a tablespoon of the unfiltered, unpasteurized variety in 8 ounces of water during meals. Why does this work? There are two theories. One is that many people actually have insufficient stomach acid. In this case, the LES (which is pH sensitive) may open when it shouldn't allow stomach acid up into the esophagus. Acidity in the vinegar communicates to the LES to stay shut keeping stomach acid where it belongs. An alternative theory is that the vinegar dilutes stomach acid somewhat (since it is less acidic), mitigating reflux symptoms but not enough to impair digestion.

In addition to directly affecting digestion, apple cider vinegar provides an array of vitamins and trace minerals and promotes a more alkaline environment in the body while it helps destroy harmful bacteria. The result is better health including improved digestion."
 Ginger
http://www.naturalnews.com/031428_heartburn_ginger.html

"Other folk traditions rely on ginger for acid reflux since it helps calm stomach acid and relax the muscles of the esophagus. Try sipping a tea made with fresh ginger root and a pinch of cinnamon as a restful way to relieve GERD symptoms."
Aloe Vera Juice
"The king of natural GI tract and stomach disorders is Aloe vera juice. Aloe vera juice needs to be shopped wisely. The cheap adulterated ones with preservatives or pasteurized stuff won't cut it. Get only pure, whole unpasteurized aloe vera juice. Yes it's pricier, but worth it.

Stomach ulcer sufferers swear by it. There have been many, many reports of Celiac disease and Crohn's disease sufferers curing themselves with aloe vera juice, as well as some experiencing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

With a disease as intense as Celiac, Crohn's or IBS, it takes several days to a few weeks of daily use to get results."
"Aloe vera cures ulcers, IBS, Crohn's disease and Celiac disease Polysaccharides in the aloe vera plant have curative effects on numerous digestive disorders. The Internet is a storehouse of information and testimonials about aloe vera curing IBS, ulcers, Crohn's disease and other disorders of the digestive tract. This is one of the best-known applications of aloe vera gel.
Taking aloe certainly isn't a magic bullet cure, of course. It won't reverse your disease after drinking one glass of aloe vera gel. It needs to be used regularly. Most people report positive results in 3 - 30 days, depending on the condition.

Aloe vera ends acid reflux disease
Acid reflux isn't really a disease. The drug companies just call it that to convince everyone that they need to take medications to ease the symptoms. But in reality, all you probably need is aloe vera. Drink aloe vera gel on a regular basis, and your heartburn symptoms will usually vanish within a few days. Of course, it would also help if you'd stop eating fried foods and processed foods."
Probiotics
"Increasing probiotics is always a good idea. Homemade milk or water kefirs, and foods such as miso and homemade sauerkraut are potent and economical probiotic foods. Less economical but conveniently accessible probiotic supplements are also available."

• helps body absorb nutrients (opposite action of soda) in first 4 to 6 hours, before gastrointestinal acids reach them.
• helps expel food within 24 hours, before it starts becoming a toxin in your system, affecting your immunity.
• aids with lactose intolerance, helping intestinal microbes produce vitamins (very important for people with IBS and Crohn's disease).
Avoid Antacids or Acid Blocking Medications Where Possible
.
On another note, as I have learnt the past couple of years researching on heartburn, the antacids or acid-blocking medications prescribed by medical doctors usually have side effects, and may only provide temporary relief, and may worsen the condition in the long run.
"I go on to explain to the patient that, while their medication may be working temporarily, the damage that it's causing to their body can be extremely dangerous over the long term. Stomach acid plays an important role in both digestion and our overall health and by blocking its production we are essentially starving the body of life sustaining nutrients."
Practise Good Eating Habits Regularly

So, treating heartburn with natural remedies are highly recommended. Waiting for 1-2 hours after eating a meal before lying down to take a nap or sleep is important too. When I lay down too soon after dinner late at night, I would feel a slight burning sensation in my throat when I belched and the partially digested food is regurgitated from my stomach before I swallowed back the food. I would remind myself to elevate my pillow and waited at least half an hour more before lying down to sleep, so as to avoid any heartburn in future.
"So, what is the first resort in heartburn treatment? Aim to prevent it in the first place, and for that, a change in eating habits is a good place to start. Many foods have a reputation for causing heartburn, including onions, garlic, hot and spicy foods, fatty or greasy foods, fried foods and highly acidic foods, like tomatoes and citrus. Chocolate and coffee are also common culprits. In addition, the way you eat is sometimes just as important as what you eat. People who eat especially quickly, who lay down after a big meal or who simply eat too much, are often more prone to heartburn. When you eat too much too fast, without chewing well, the stomach must produce more acid to break down food, creating problems for you down the line. Therefore, in addition to paying attention to the types of foods you eat, and avoiding those that trigger heartburn, you must also be aware of portion size and how quickly you eat,"
This website on natural remedies summarises three simple steps to get rid of heartburn and GERD forever:
http://chriskresser.com/get-rid-of-heartburn-and-gerd-forever-in-three-simple-steps
  1. Reduce factors that promote bacterial overgrowth and low stomach acid. (such as avoiding artificial sweeteners such as fructose)
  2. Replace stomach acid, enzymes and nutrients that aid digestion and are necessary for health. (such as adding apple cider vinegar to water, drinking lemon juice, etc)
  3. Restore beneficial bacteria and a healthy mucosal lining in the gut. (such as taking probiotics)

Home remedies for treating diarrhea

According to this website, in developed countries such as USA, diarrhea outbreaks are more often linked to contaminated water supplies, food poisioning, and so on. Some viral infections are also more common in summer.  http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/digestive/diarrhea.html#

Here's a summary of home remedies widely recommended to treat diarrhea, based on several sources of information on this subject.

- Apple juice or clear broth (which may include miso soup), but avoid citrus, pineapple, tomato and other jouice since the acid in them can irritate already inflamed intestines. Start with small sips and work your way up to drinking a cup every half hour.

- Vinegar. If a bacterial infection is at the root of your diarrhea, apple cider vinegar could help contain the problem, thanks to its antibiotic properties. What's more, some folk remedy experts contend that apple cider vinegar contains pectin, which can help soothe intestinal spasms.

- Honey. Many cultures swear by honey as a cure for diarrhea. Mix 4 tablespoons of honey into a cup of hot water. Let cool and drink. It's very sweet, but effective. (Come to think of it, I think 1 tablespoon of honey in a glass of warm water is sufficient, otherwise it would be too sweet.)

This website supports the recommendation of drinking water with honey to treat diarrhea. http://www.islamweb.net/emainpage/index.php?page=articles&id=157149
Honey has tremendous medicinal value, because it washes away the harmful substances that might be collected in the intestines and the veins. In treating diarrhea, honey promotes the rehydration of the body and more quickly clears up the diarrhea and any vomiting and stomach upsets. The anti-bacterial properties of honey, both the peroxide and non-peroxide, are effective against MRSA strains of bacteria which are notoriously resistant to antibiotics and are sometimes responsible for the closing of hospital wards.
- Ginger "has been shown to prevent the gases and spasms that can contribute to diarrhea."

Other remedies include pomegranate juice, chamomile tea, rice, potatoes, bananas, yoghurts (in small amounts).

These information are taken from "Reader's Digest Easy Home Remedies" (free iphone app) and the following websites:
http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/natural-medicine/home-remedies/10-home-remedies-for-diarrhea.htm
http://physicalandspiritualhealth.blogspot.sg/2012/07/health-benefits-of-pomegranate.html
http://www.naturalnews.com/036649_honey_home_remedies_medicine.html

The website also suggests other alternative treatments, such as consuming probiotics, as well as practising yoga and meditation to provide relief from diarrhea.

http://www.everydayhealth.com/health-report/diarrhea-management/diarrhea-home-remedies.aspx

"Consuming probiotics, either as a supplement or in foods such as yogurt, may help restore healthful amounts of good bacteria in your intestinal tract. In turn, this helps slow down or stop your loose, watery bowel movements."
Some of the websites also recommend prevention measures, such as washing hands before eating meals since some virus or bacteria may have been passed on from touching common surfaces in public places, public transport, etc.

Ways to Reduce the Risks of Cancer

It's simple: what we do today determines our risk for disease tomorrow.

With this thought in mind, we can strive to apply the following guidelines to our daily choices to reduce risk of most chronic, degenerative conditions, including almost all types of cancer:
  1. Limit intake of refined sugar.
  2. Limit intake of unhealthy oils that are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  3. Limit exposure to ionizing radiation and electromagnetic fields.
  4. Avoid use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement drugs whenever possible.
  5. Minimize exposure to exogenous toxins like pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, dioxins, asbestos, volatile organic compounds, and polychlorinated biphenyls.
  6. Minimize or completely avoid use of recreational drugs.
  7. Optimize vitamin D status.
  8. Work at getting regular aerobic exercise and restful sleep.
  9. Strive to be emotionally balanced i.e. avoid living in a fight/flight state where sympathetic nervous system output dominates parasympathetic (rest/digest) tone.

Some observations about aural energy

"Pay attention to whom you share your intimate energy with. Intimacy at this level intertwines your aural energy with the aural energy of the other person. These powerful connections, regardless of how insignificant you think they are, leave spiritual debris, particularly within people who do not practice any type of cleansing, physical, emotional or otherwise. The more you interact intimately with someone, the deeper the connection and the more of their aura is intertwined with yours.

Imagine the confused aura of someone who sleeps with multiple people and carries around these multiple energies? What they may not realize is that others can feel that energy which can repel positive energy and attract negative energy into your life.

I always say, never sleep with someone you wouldn't want to be."

30 Uses of Apple Cider Vinegar

30 uses for apple cider vinegar from Green Tidings

Here's sharing an excerpt from this excellent health article on apple cider vinegar as a natural remedy for health conditions.
"You might wonder, if Apple Cider Vinegar is so great, why hasn't your doctor told you about it?

I think the simple reason might be that medical doctors are more apt to prescribe medicines than natural remedies.

Pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of money getting their medicines and pills approved and they certainly wouldn't want you using the inexpensive, unpatentable alternative of ACV instead of buying their expensive cures and treatments.

One big problems today that many people suffer from is acid reflux. Consequently, pharmaceutical companies have come up with a plethora of pills to treat this ailment. But before you take pills that may be harmful to you, you might want to consider treating your acid reflux or other stomach ailments with apple cider vinegar.

You see, your stomach needs acid to digest food and when you have digestive problems like acid reflux or heartburn it's not because you have too much acid it's because there is too little. Most medications you would take for these are antacids which diminish the amount of acid in your stomach but this may not be what you need. These antacids may treat the symptoms but they will not address the cause and therefore, will never cure your problem.

Apple cider vinegar will mimic the acid level of your stomach and help you digest food properly which can help to treat that burning sensation. In addition, you might also consider taking digestive enzymes that will help your stomach digest the food.

If you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn or nausea, try taking one tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar prior to each meal. You may see your symptoms go away in as little as three days. However, you'll want to continue this practice for three to nine months and you may see the problem disappear altogether.

You don't want to use just any kind of ACV, though. What you need is organic apple cider vinegar that still has the enzymes in it (called the "mother"). This is where the healing properties are. The "mother" will show up inside the bottle as stringy globs floating around. To get the most out of your vinegar, shake it up each time you take a swig so that the mother can be dispersed throughout."
